I have hunted all my life and squirrel hunting most of it. I got interested in getting a squirrel dog about three years ago so the kids and I could walk, talk and hunt at the same time. A nice gentleman gave me a mountain cur that was a started dog and a cull of some sort. After about two months of trying and difficult non-productive hunting, PeeWee started turning into a real squirrel dog.
PeeWee is four years old now and we kill squirrels most anytime we want. He'll find them day or night, and I mean "at night". I've tried to coon hunt him at night but he still trees squirrels even at night.
Well, from PeeWee, I thought I had to have some more dogs. So I drove to South Carolina and got two pups out of the same male as PeeWee. They have different mothers. Those pups are now sixteen months old. The female is treeing, but will not bark unless she sees the squirrel. The male is not treeing, although he has shown a couple of squirrels. He is pretty much nose only when he hunts. Needless to say, two young dogs is cutting into my real hunting time this year, but its all fun as long as your in the woods.
My dogs are PeeWee, Dixie, Roscoe and Sandy. Sandy is a drop off that we adopted. She is half yellow lab, half golden retriever. We tried to turn her into a squirrel dog so we could give her away, but she doesn't like all the shooting. She's okay with a shot or two, but when the squirrel starts running, sho does she. She'll usually find a bush to go hide under.
